This endowment award was instituted by Prof. IC Verma in 2015, with the consent of ISHG. This award is meant for Indian citizens with notable lifetime contributions in the area of human genetics, medical genetics or related field in India and is bestowed during an Annual meeting of the ISHG, once in every two years.
Eligibility:
When the call for the award is announced by ISHG once in two years, and at least three months prior to the respective annual meeting, any Indian scientist who fulfils the criteria is eligible to be nominated, by an annual or life member of ISHG. A scientist can receive the award only once.
A nominee can be (a) of any age; (b) shall have made significant and sustained lifetime contributions to human genetics/medical genetics and its development in India; (c) shall not have received the LD Sanghvi Oration Award of the Indian Society of Human Genetics; and (d) should have worked in institutions located in India at least for 10 years immediately preceding the year of the award.
Procedure for selection
- Eligible scientists may be nominated using the Nomination Form provided by the ISHG for this purpose; the filled nomination shall be sent to the Secretary, ISHG, so as to reach him/her at least three months prior to the respective annual meeting.
- At least six to eight weeks prior to the oration during the annual ISHG meeting, the President of the society shall constitute a committee of three eminent scientists for selection of the awardee for the respective year. In case no nomination is found suitable for the award, fresh nominations may be considered the following year.
- No member of the Executive council can serve as a member of the Selection Committee.
- The president shall choose a chairperson from among the members of the Selection Committee and inform the members accordingly and about the criteria for eligibility.
- The Selection Committee may, if necessary, call for Bio-data from additional scientists whom they wish to consider.
- The Chairperson of the Selection Committee shall communicate the name of the scientist selected to the Secretary at least three to four weeks before the respective annual meeting.
- The Secretary shall then immediately inform and request the nominee to give the award lecture at the following Annual meeting and obtain a detailed Bio-data of the nominee.
Privileges:
- The nominee shall be invited to give the oration at a Special Session of one hour duration at the Annual meeting.
- The award constitutes a citation, a silver plaque, a cash award of Rs 20,000/- and an economy class round trip airfare to the venue of the annual meeting covered by the endowment fund. Local hospitality would be provided by the organiser of the respective annual meeting.
- The Society may publish in some form the oration and/or citation and the Bio-data of the nominee.
